Island Dog becomes a Sailor
Pulled off the streets of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, Henry was a skinny and shy little puppy. The overpopulation of dogs in the Virgin Islands didn’t allow many chances for adoption, so he was transferred to Friends of Strays Animal Shelter in the hopes of finding him a forever home.
Enter, SailFuture. SailFuture is an adventure sailing program that helps at-risk high school students and youth in the child welfare system find purpose and direction. They specialize in creating second chances, reaching and impacting students that traditional programs have been unable to engage. Their program focuses on three core components: near-age mentorship, academic interventions, and sailing.
Madeline, the Education Director at SailFuture, saw Henry’s picture on Facebook and knew she had to meet him. She came in with five of the boys staying at the group home and they all immediately fell in love with Henry! This little puppy, as shy as he was, relaxed in their arms as they passed him around to give him kisses and snuggles. There was no way they could leave without him!
Henry, now known as Scooby, is living the adventurous life with SailFuture! Michael, the Executive Director of SailFuture, has welcomed Scooby into the group home with open arms. “Scooby has brought joy, comfort, and calm to the young men we care for, and the staff that care for them. His presence is widely felt, and helps our house feel more like a home.”
Madeline has seen the positive changes that Scooby has made in the group home already, like helping teach the boys responsibility and love. “Scooby has been a welcome addition to the house. We knew that once we met him, and experienced his infectious and lovable personality, there was no going back. I'm grateful to Friends of Strays for continuing to care for, and find homes for, animals like Scooby.”
Scooby has already had his first beach day, he's been out on the sailboats, and he's loving every minute of it! Scooby’s next step is to find a suitable life-vest and begin his training as a therapy dog! You can learn more about SailFuture and their mission here: www.sailfuture.org
