Hurricane Irma came, and saw, but didn’t conquer!
Thanks to the hard work of every member of the Friends of Strays team, the shelter came through the storm with no damage or power loss and all of our animals are safe. We did not evacuate the animals due the fact that the shelter is in a non-evacuation zone and because of the storm prep we did including sandbagging all of the doors/entryways, closing the hurricane shutters, and preparing our detention pond drain to ensure there was no overflow. We are incredibly grateful to our friends at FedEx who came out a couple of weeks ago to dig out the drainage pipe to the detention pond in the dog yard. Without their efforts, we may have had to deal with flooding in the shelter.
Our Executive Director, Dara Eckart, and her husband Greg packed up their own dogs and cats and moved into the shelter Saturday evening to stay with our animals throughout the storm to make sure they had food, water, and the love and care they needed to make it through Irma.
WFLA came and did a story on our Hurricane Irma adventure! Check out the link here!
We want to thank all of our supporters for reaching out to us to make sure we were safe and for sending good thoughts our way and hope all of our friends were as fortunate as we were here.
